Homemade Elderberry Syrup...

Flu Season has arrived and it seems as though
it gets a hold of someone in your household, every time!

My hubby came home last week with it and we were all prepared!

I got on that ol' trusty Google and started looking
up home remedies for fighting the flu and I found this easy
Homemade Elderberry Syrup recipe that cuts the flu in half the time.

Plus Elderberry Syrup has a lot of great health benefits too!

It boosts your immune system
It can treat an upper respiratory infection
It's rich in vitamins A and C

So, what you'll need to get started is:
2/3 c. black elderberries (fresh, frozen or dried)
3 1/2 c. water
2 Tbsp. fresh or dried ginger root
1 tsp. cinnamon powder
1/2 tsp. clove powder
1 c. raw honey

Place all of the above ingredients
except the honey into a large sauce pot.
Bring to a boil and then cover and reduce to a simmer
for about 45 minutes or until liquid has reduced by half.
At this point remove from heat and let cool enough to be handled.

Pour through a strainer into a glass jar or bowl.
Discard the elderberries and let the liquid cool to lukewarm.

When it is no longer hot, stir in the 1 cup Honey and stir well.

When Honey is mixed well into the Elderberry mixture,
 pour the syrup into jars.
Store in the fridge for up to 3 months.

Take daily to boost your immune system.

Standard dose is 1/2 tsp. for kids and 1 tbsp. for adults.
If the flu does strike, take the normal dose
every 2-3 hours until symptoms are gone.

Have a great week,

Good Morning, Amy this is so wonderful! I think you have found and shared another God given herb to help keep us healthy. And to also make us feel better if we do catch a virus. As Elderberry is an antiviral antidote. I am so grateful that you shared it with everyone! I hope they will get busy and make-up a batch and have it in the refrigerator like we now have! Thanks to YOU!
Blessings, Love Roxy

I am so glad you posted this Amy; I have used elderberry syrup for a long time, and have been wanting to make it
for quite a while. I was excited to hear you say you had made it and had been meaning to call you about it. Love the post. Have a wonderful week.
Love and Blessings,

Hi Amy! What a wonderful wife you are! What a blessing that you look to natural herbs too. I'm sure this syrup is good tasting, and good for your husband (and all of you) too. Thank you for sharing!

Fortunately, we have ducked the flu so far...but I see that you can use this preventatively. Perfect :)
So good to see you on the blog recently. You are wonderful.

I've wanted to make my own elderberry something to help with viruses. Shucks elderberry doesn't help with computer viruses. I've had the kids look all over our property, but we haven't found elderberries. If we owned the place, I'd plant them.

Blessings,
Laura of Harvest Lane Cottage

Amy, thanks for your comment on my blog.
Good to hear from you :)
I love elderberries! We found that could pick them here in Utah, and we've been able to harvest them in September. They sure freeze well; we take them out to make the medicinal syrup as needed.
Did you find it helped with the flu?

That sounds very interesting. We don't have elderflowers here - fresh or dried so I might have to google and see what I can use instead.
